Ghost Towns & Abandoned Places
I've had a lifelong fascination with abandoned, dilapidated places since I was a kid. My first exposure was back in 2000 when my uncles and I discovered an abandoned house in the Mojave Desert near our relative's home. The structure still stood, but the interior was completely wrecked. Graffiti covered the walls, empty bottles littered the ground and there was a massive rat infestation; when we kicked over a rotting couch, tons of them scurried away. It was a creepy experience, but I was immediately hooked and wanted more.
Those same uncles took me to the husk of a tractor that had long been deserted, near a campground in Orange County, California. Upon examination it was not unusual, but there was a legend that the tractor stood where it's driver was decapitated in a terrible accident. I have no idea if that story was true or if my relatives were messing with me, but it sparked my interest in such folk history and lore.
The write-ups below are of various adventures of mine photographing and capturing on video various abandoned places along with old cemeteries. Some I will not provide locations for as they are not protected, but many will be accessible with a bit of online research.
